Extend our Garden Season By Building New Greenhouses at our School Farm

Help our Twin Rivers Charter School grow more of its own food for students enrolled at the school by building a large greenhouse and several cloches (kind of like mini greenhouses) at our on-site Laurel Valley Educational Farm during this one-day Day of Caring. These will increase our winter growing space by 500%, as well as allow us to get an earlier start on spring planting. Various tasks planned for that day include stretching plastic over cloche frames, and construction of the front and rear ends of these structures. As time permits, other tasks around the farm include clearing away old plants, removing irrigation tape for the season, managing weeds, applying mulches, harvesting, cleaning, and preparing produce. Little to no tool skills needed.

We need 12 people for 4 hours for the greenhouse and 12 people for 4 hours for the cloches. Volunteers, please bring your favorite work gloves if you want, as well as sturdy work shoes, water bottles, and sunscreen. Also, we recommend wearing long pants to keep your legs protected from kneeling and sunburn. NYC will provide gloves and needed tools, as well as coffee or tea, water, granola bars, lemonade, and good times.

Additional information. The Northwest’s largest and oldest youth conservation corps program, Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) is based in Eugene, Oregon. Since 1984, NYC has helped more than 21,000 youth and young adults to learn, grow, and experience success through environmentally-related service learning. NYC’s Farm grows food for hundreds of teens in NYC’s field programs and NYC’s accredited Twin Rivers Charter School. Culinary Arts students in the school learn to transform produce they grow into tasty, nutritious, economical hot lunches for the school.
