Laurel Hill Center Transitional Housing Landscaping Project

The plan for the 2018 United Way Day of Caring includes general flowerbed clean up, weeding, cutting back bushes and roses, rebuilding boarders, and laying a stone walkway. The three houses on this property are transitional and respite housing for adults in need of a safe space to recover from mental health crisis and transition back to community living. Staff and Peer Support professionals are on site to support transitions and promote a safe, welcoming environment.
 

Supplies & tools provided by Laurel Hill Center:

Mower, power hedge trimmer, string trimmer, chain saw, assorted hand tools. Pick-up truck to haul supplies and debris.

If volunteers have any of the following supplies, we would appreciate you bringing them to the project: *Not required*

Rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows (1 or 2), pruning shears and loppers, work gloves. Pick-up truck to haul debris if available.

Flowerbed plants to donate.

Bark mulch, gravel, pavers or flag stones, railroad ties.

 

Projects:

  • Prune shrubs, bushes, and trees around all three houses. Clear branches overhanging walkways and driveways. Trim branches away from the siding, gutters, and roofline within reach.
  • Weed garden beds and remove leaves and debris. Remove any dead growth in preparation for winter. Place debris in yard waste bin and pile near curb for pick up when bin is full, or fill pickup bed as directed by maintenance staff.
  • Lay bark mulch in garden beds 2-3” thick.
  • Lay gravel 3-4” thick on walkway behind 754 between the house and the back fence.
  • Remove sod and lay flagstones between 754 and 768 leading from back gate to front entryways of both houses. Space stones at comfortable walking intervals and leave grass between.
  • Lay gravel 3-4” thick on both sides of gate to prevent mud.
  • Remove old railroad ties from around garden bed in front of 754 and replace with new.
  • Straighten up rock boarders as needed.
