Exhibition Interpreter at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art

The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is the world class arts museum on the University of Oregon campus.  We are the only academic art museum in Oregon accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.  Our all volunteer Exhibition Interpreter (EI) program is responsible for touring approximately 5000 K-12 students and teachers throughout the museum annually.  This docent program is supported by an intensive training program for all new EIs, further extensive support and mentorship during your first year, and continuing education throughout your service with twice monthly educational meetings, museum walk throughs with artists and curators and occassional field trips.

We offer the benefit of continuing education on the JSMA collections and exhibitions, support in an atmosphere that values human creativity and spirit, and the ability to be part of a community of art and education advocates. Other benefits of the program are:

  • FREE year-long membership to the JSMA
  • A 10% discount in the Marché Museum Café
  • A 10% discount in the Museum Store
  • Annual EI appreciation luncheon

Before working with our visitors, volunteers will complete our 8 session training course and gain experience with shadowing tours and then giving tours in tandem with other experienced EIs.  After training and practical sessions, volunteers are required to give 3 tours per month, typically Wednesday through Friday mornings and attend 2 Tuesday morning meetings per month.  While many of our Exhibition Interpreters have a teaching or arts background, all that we require is a love for the arts and humanities to be considered for participation.  Our next training program begins in late September.
