Volunteer with the Intergenerational Reading Collaborative (IRC)

Literacy Is Important. In Lane County, more than half of students aren’t meeting important reading benchmarks, which significantly impacts their likelihood of graduating from high school.

IRC brings together children and adults to encourage and support children’s literacy and academic development. Through weekly reading instruction, volunteers help ensure K-3 students stay on track to reach important reading benchmarks by third grade, while building a positive behavior culture with students.

Volunteers are needed in Cottage Grove and Creswell for two hours each week to support in K-3 grade classrooms, help lesson plan, read with kids one-on-one and in small groups, and provide assistance with children’s specific educational needs.

IRC is modeled after the Baltimore School District Experience Corps, which regularly reports better test scores among their students, fewer behavior issues, and a happier and healthier community of older adult volunteers.
